Bronze Filled PTFE

Goa Polymer manufactures Bronze Filled PTFE in rod, sheet, tube, and custom-machined forms from our ISO 9001:2015 certified facility in Maharashtra, India. With 40–60% bronze powder content, this grade combines PTFE’s low friction and chemical stability with bronze’s high compressive strength, thermal conductivity, and wear resistance — making it the first choice for bearings, bushings, thrust washers, piston rings, and hydraulic seals under sustained mechanical load.

About this material

What Is Bronze Filled PTFE?

Bronze Filled PTFE is produced by uniformly blending bronze powder (typically 40% or 60% by weight) into a PTFE matrix before sintering. The bronze particles form a load-bearing network within the soft PTFE, increasing compressive strength and thermal conductivity while the PTFE binder maintains low friction and prevents metal-to-metal contact between the part and its mating surface.

The result is a material that can carry loads three to five times higher than virgin PTFE, dissipates heat from the bearing surface faster, and resists deformation under sustained compression — the three main failure modes of plain PTFE in bearing and sealing applications. At Goa Polymer, Bronze Filled PTFE is sintered and machined in-house, with dimensional checks on all finished parts before dispatch.

Key Features & Benefits

High Compressive Strength

Compressive strength up to 150 MPa (60% grade) — three to five times higher than virgin PTFE. Handles sustained bolt loads, press-fit assembly, and high bearing pressures without permanent deformation.

Superior Thermal Conductivity

Thermal conductivity 3–5× higher than virgin PTFE. Bronze particles conduct frictional heat away from the bearing surface, reducing operating temperature and extending component life in high-speed or high-load applications.

Low Friction — Self-Lubricating

Coefficient of friction of 0.10–0.20 (dry). Operates without oil or grease in clean environments. The PTFE matrix continuously transfers a thin film to the mating surface, preventing galling and reducing wear on both parts.

Reduced Creep vs Virgin PTFE

Bronze reinforcement significantly reduces cold flow under sustained compressive load — the primary failure mode of plain PTFE bearings and thrust washers. Components maintain their press-fit and dimensional accuracy longer.

Excellent Machinability

Bronze Filled PTFE machines cleanly on CNC lathes and mills. Turns, bores, and threads to tight tolerances (±0.05 mm achievable) without burring — producing finished bearings and bushings directly from rod or tube stock.

Dimensionally Stable

Lower coefficient of thermal expansion than virgin PTFE. Components maintain press-fit and running clearances across a wider operating temperature range — important for precision bearing housings and piston assemblies.

⚠️ Chemical resistance limitation: Bronze Filled PTFE is not suitable for service with acids (HCl, H₂SO₄, HNO₃), oxidising media, chlorine, or seawater. The bronze particles corrode in these environments, causing the material to swell and lose mechanical integrity. For aggressive chemical service, use Glass-Filled PTFE or virgin PTFE instead.

Supply forms

Available Forms & Dimensions

Bronze Filled PTFE is supplied as standard stock shapes for in-house machining, or as finished components machined to your drawing. All forms are available in 40% and 60% bronze grades.

Bronze Filled PTFE Rod

The most common stock form. Machined on a CNC lathe into bushings, flanged bearings, thrust washers, and piston rings. Straight-bore and flanged profiles are the most common finished shapes.

  • Diameter: 10 mm to 200 mm (standard stock)
  • Length: up to 300 mm per piece (standard)
  • Longer blanks available on request
  • Both 40% and 60% bronze in stock

Bronze Filled PTFE Sheet

For flat seals, thrust pads & wear plates

Cut into flat thrust washers, wear plates, and sealing pads. Also used for sliding bearing surfaces in guide rails and linear motion systems where a flat low-friction surface is required.

Industries served

Applications of Bronze Filled PTFE

Bronze Filled PTFE is used wherever a component must carry a high mechanical load, operate dry or with minimal lubrication, and transfer heat away from the sliding surface. These are the primary application areas.

Hydraulic & Pneumatic Systems

Piston rings, rod seals, and guide rings in hydraulic cylinders. Handles high contact pressure and operates dry between stroke cycles without galling on the cylinder bore.

Pumps & Compressors

Sleeve bearings, thrust washers, and wear rings in pump housings. The high PV rating (0.10 MPa·m/s) and thermal conductivity handle the heat generated at high shaft speeds.

Automotive

Gearbox bushings, suspension pivot bearings, and steering column bearings. Operates dry, resists engine oils and transmission fluids, and reduces NVH (noise, vibration, harshness).

Aerospace & Defence

Actuation system bushings, control surface bearings, and landing gear pivot liners. Certified material grades available; operates across the full thermal range of aircraft environments.

Heavy Industrial Machinery

Bridge expansion bearings, crane slewing ring liners, and press tool guides. The 60% bronze grade carries structural loads that would crush virgin PTFE within hours.

General Engineering

Conveyor guide rails, linear slide bearings, and rotary table bushings in machinery where oil lubrication is impractical, undesirable, or a contamination risk.

Common questions

Frequently Asked Questions — Bronze Filled PTFE

What is Bronze Filled PTFE and how is it made?
Bronze Filled PTFE is produced by blending bronze powder (40% or 60% by weight) with PTFE resin, pressing the mixture into billets under high pressure, and sintering at approximately 370–380°C. The bronze particles form a reinforcing network within the PTFE matrix. The sintered billet is then machined into rods, sheets, tubes, or finished components on CNC equipment.

40% bronze grade provides a balance of improved load capacity and retained chemical resistance — the better choice when components may contact water, mild solvents, or lubricants. 60% bronze gives maximum hardness (Shore D 70–78), compressive strength (up to 150 MPa), and thermal conductivity, but sacrifices nearly all chemical resistance. Use 60% only in purely mechanical applications — hydraulic cylinders, gearbox bushings, press tooling — where chemical contact is not a concern.

No. Bronze corrodes in acids (HCl, H₂SO₄, HNO₃), oxidising media, chlorine, and seawater. When the bronze particles corrode, the part swells, loses structural integrity, and fails in service. For chemical service requiring improved mechanical properties over virgin PTFE, use Glass-Filled PTFE (good for most acids and bases) or Carbon-Filled PTFE (good for non-oxidising chemicals).

The dry PV (pressure × velocity) rating is 0.06 MPa·m/s for the 40% grade and 0.10 MPa·m/s for the 60% grade. If the product of contact pressure and sliding speed in your application exceeds these values, the bearing surface will overheat and fail. Lubricated PV ratings are 3–5× higher. Share your bearing load, shaft speed, and bore diameter with our team and we will calculate whether Bronze Filled PTFE is within its safe operating range.

Goa Polymer machines Bronze Filled PTFE into straight bushings (plain bearings), flanged bushings, split bushings for easy installation, thrust washers, piston rings, guide rings, wear plates, and custom profiles to customer drawings. Parts are delivered ready to fit — no secondary machining required. Standard dimensional tolerances of ±0.05 mm are achievable; tighter tolerances available on request.

Sintered bronze bearings (oilite type) require oil impregnation or a grease supply to operate — they fail when the oil reservoir is depleted. Bronze Filled PTFE operates completely dry: the PTFE matrix provides permanent self-lubrication and prevents metal-to-metal contact. Bronze Filled PTFE also tolerates misalignment better, does not require regreasing, and is lighter. Sintered bronze has higher load capacity at very low speeds; Bronze Filled PTFE is better for moderate-to-high speeds in clean, dry, or oil-free environments.
